Disab BagVac Plays its Part in Building Britain’s Biggest War Ship

Disab BagVac Plays its Part in Building Britain’s Biggest War Ship

DISAB UK were proud to play a small part in the process of constructing HMS Queen Elizabeth, a new class of aircraft carriers that will be the biggest and most powerful warships ever constructed for the Royal Navy with a full displacement of 65,000 tonnes. At 280m, the HMS Queen Elizabeth is longer than the Houses of Parliament (265m).

We were approached by our longstanding client Wood Group, to provide an Industrial vacuum unit to help in the shot-blasting aspect of their contract for the building of HMS Queen Elizabeth.

The Wood group own a number of grit recovery units from Disab and decided they wanted to use the BagVac to help reclaim all the spent shot. They have had great success using this machine on bridges all over the country so it seemed like a great fit for this long project of blasting and painting an aircraft carrier. The units ability to recover grit over very long distances and its reliability were key factors in the choice.

If you haven’t seen it already you can still watch the BBC1 documentary ‘Britain’s Biggest Warship’ on BBC iplayer. Just click on the image below.

Cogent Power

“The BagVac™ transformed the way we dealt with spent shot. For the first time we could suck up the good shot that leaks constantly from the hoppers, and instead of throwing it away and having to re-order more, we have been able to recycle it back into the shot blasting process.”

favicon2

Longcliffe Quarries

“The BagVac™ helped us address and achieve key operational objectives including reduced dust generation and exposure, improved housekeeping, and increased efficiency. We think it’s brilliant!”

favicon2

SITA UK

“The BagVac™ enabled my team to remove two to three tonnes of fly ash and general dust build up from around the EfW plant well within the timing of the maintenance outage we’d planned. It was much faster, and more time was spent cleaning than emptying things or moving equipment around!”

favicon2

Wood Group

“The BagVac™ was pulling between 5-6 tonnes per hour of grit along 200 metres of hose. That kind of reliability and performance adds a lot of value to the work we’re doing, so we’ve gone ahead and purchased two of them.”

The Key Benefits of an Industrial Vacuum System

The Key Benefits of an Industrial Vacuum System

Industrial Vacuum Systems are widely used across a broad array of industries and sectors, and for good reason.

We highlight some of the most important benefits for incorporating an Industrial Vacuum Unit.

Save time and money on house keeping

Regular housekeeping is essential best practice for all industrial processes. Traditional methods such as sweeping are time consuming, labour intensive and are never fully effective at capturing waste material. Industrial vacuums such as the Skipvac help employees carry out housekeeping tasks to a much higher level. They simplify the process and make it easier for staff to reach all the areas that are often difficult to reach using conventional techniques.

“The SKIPVAC system’s very easy to use, and we’re now achieving a much cleaner, better workplace and environment as a result. The employee morale is higher, and they can see a direct benefit from their original submission of the Keystone project to the way they’re now working. They’ve been able to make general regular housekeeping tasks much easier and quicker to fulfil, and are much more willing to do these tasks.”

Cally Bristow

Health & Safety Manager, Lafarge Plasterboard

Labour saving

DISAB vacuums can provide suction over large distances with capacities up to 4 tonnes per hour – cleaning up in minutes what can take days to do manually. Consequently waste removal is faster, easier and more efficient meaning that less time is spent by cleaning operators. So downtime is significantly reduced. Saving time and manpower.

Recently we worked with Allglass who had historically used manual techniques such as brooms, brushes and barrows to remove airborne dust and surface dust. Acting on advice from the HSE they arranged a demo of, and then hired, a DISAB CompVac. Its vacuum power and capacity transformed the way they dealt with dust removal and thus exposure risks. Instead of sweeping and brushing, particles as fine as 10 microns up to 8mms were being sucked up with minimal effort and collected in the CompVac’s large internal hopper.

“The DISAB CompVacTM is much faster than brushing and shovelling, but more to the point, it’s a far more effective solution to our achieving the lowest exposure limits we can. With brooms and brushes there was a lot we couldn’t do – the DISAB CompVac’s changed all that.”

Kevin Lamont

Plant Manager, Allglass Reprocessors UK Ltd

Material cost savings

Large material deposits caused by industrial processes can be extracted quickly and safely disposed of, or recycled back into process. This recycling of lost materials back into the production cycle can lead to enormous cost savings.

Reduction in dust damage

Our vacuum technology is capable of removing very fine particles from the atmosphere, meaning that there’s less dust to get into the moving parts of your plant and machinery. The knock on effect is that expensive equipment becomes more reliable and lasts longer. Saving you money on machinery costs and downtime.

Health and Safety

There’s no need for lengthy, back-breaking manual collection. Thanks to our fully enclosed systems and highly advanced filters, harmful dusts are instantly removed and safely contained, minimising the risk of dust exposure to your employees.

Summary of benefits

  • Labour and time associated cost reductions through cleaning efficiencies
  • Fast on the spot cleaning power for immediate cleaning solutions
  • Cost and time savings due to improvements in plant effectiveness
  • Cost savings through production material reuse
  • Safe and efficient dust collection means a healthier indoor environment

DISAB innovation helps CPI Euromix win top Health and Safety award.

DISAB innovation helps CPI Euromix win top Health and Safety award.

This month DISAB UK were delighted to be part of an award winning entry to this year’s Mineral Products Association Health and Safety Awards.

The annual ceremony celebrates innovation & ingenuity to make the workplace a healthier and safe place and this year the ‘Occupational Health and Well Being award’ went to CPI Euromix.

Through our assistance and technology, CPI has been able to eradicate the presence of respirable crystalline silica (RCS) in all their operations. This is a significant achievement for the minerals industry and one that we are proud to be a part of.

Exposure to RCS can be a major cause of lung disease and be a significant risk to the wellbeing of those who work in the minerals sector. CPI has used our SkipVac portable industrial vacuum as part of their general housekeeping for some time. However, their external H&S inspection team recently flagged the risk of RCS passing through the SkipVac’s exhaust system and standard filters.

Head of Operations Craig Buttenshaw tasked DISAB UK’s MD Richard Eve to find a solution. The solution was to retrofit a SkipVac with an Absolut HEPA filter. This high level of filtration has lead to a dramatic reduction in RCS, to a level where they can no longer be detected by the measuring equipment.

Mr Buttenshaw said:

“I was hoping the modified SkipVAC would meet the HSE workplace requirements of less than 0.1mg/m3, but I was very pleased to be told by our independent inspection team that ‘No RCS was found’. This is a real step forward in our goal to improve employee wellbeing, and we’re now making sure all our SkipVACs are being modified with DISAB’s Absolut HEPA filters.”

All of the CPI Euromix SkipVacs have now been modified with the DISAB Absolut HEPA filter, reinforcing the company’s reputation as a progressive employer that puts health and safety first.

Richard Eve DISAB UK’s Managing Director said:

“It is always a pleasure to work with companies who take health and safety seriously and we were not just glad to provide the solution but pleased about CPI’s recognition at the MPA awards. This modification makes the DISAB SkipVAC one of, if not the, safest industrial vacuum machine to use in workplaces where RCS is a risk factor.”

This award is of particular relevance right now with the Workplace Healthy Lungs Summit about to take place in the next couple of days. The summit highlights the shift in emphasis that the HSE is now making on workplace safety and will describe what HSE is doing about tackling lung safety, what science and evidence can tell us and what employers can do about it.

What is a COSHH assessment (And why you need to do one)

What is a COSHH assessment (And why you need to do one)

Last year the HSE held the Workplace Healthy Lungs Summit which sought to tackle Occupational Lung disease by bringing employers and experts together to look at the science, evidence and the best practice that can lead to improved control of risk.

This summit was crucially important for the thousands of employees that work in hazardous conditions and consequently have a higher likelihood of suffering from Occupational lung diseases.

What is Occupational lung disease?

The European Respiratory Society states a definitive link between occupational exposures to hazardous materials such as airborne dust and the development or worsening of common respiratory diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma and lung cancer.

“Both the accumulation of toxic dust in the lungs and immunological sensitisation to inhaled occupational agents can cause interstitial lung disease.”

The legal obligation to protecting employee health

Most businesses use or create materials/products that are mixtures of substances that can potentially cause harm to employees, contractors and other people associated with the business.

If you work in an industry that produces substances like these then it is the employer’s responsibility to ensure that adequate prevention and control measures are put in place and their first port of call should be a COSHH assessment.

What is COSHH?

COSHH stands for ‘Control of Substances Hazardous to Health’ and under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002.

These regulations place a legal obligation on employers to either prevent or reduce their workers’ exposure to substances that are hazardous to their health.

Hazardous substances can include:

  • Substances used directly in work activities (e.g. cement, chemicals etc)
  • Substances generated during work activities (e.g. grain dust, silica etc.)
  • Naturally occurring substances (e.g. grain dust, wood dust)
  • Biological agents such as bacteria and other micro-organisms.

The HSE has a free downloadable guide called ‘Working with substances hazardous to health’ – which gives an overview of what COSHH is and what it means for employers.

The COSHH assessment explained

A COSHH assessment is essentially a risk assessment that evaluates a specific task or process that involves using a potentially hazardous substance.

The COSHH Assessment is carried out in order to:

➢ Identify any hazardous substances you may use and what the health hazards are.
➢ Evaluate whether you are taking sufficient precautions to reduce exposure risk to an acceptable level.
➢ Decide on any additional control measures you may need to put in place to prevent or control the exposure to an acceptable level.

The HSE provide useful information about COSHH and how it affects you in your industry. Click here for more information.

What YOU need to do next

Whether you are an employer or an employee, if you are working in an industrial environment where air quality may be an issue then it’s essential that you evaluate your own processes and make changes that will not only benefit the workforce but also potentially increase productivity and efficiencies.

If you have specific requirements about the removal of dust in your workplace, whatever the industry, a DISAB industrial Vacuum unit can help. Get in touch with the DISAB team who can offer specialist advice on your sector and specific needs.
